INTRODUCTION
------------
Thank you for taking the time to look at Printer's Apprentice 6.5, the
best font manager around. This file contains information about the
software, pricing and technical support. Instructions for quickly
installing Printer's Apprentice are also included. The software
manual is contained in an online help file (pa.hlp).
Printer's Apprentice is a comprehensive, 32 bit font manager for Windows 95.
We have designed it to be the best Windows font manager available today.
With this software you can examine your TrueType and ATM font collection,
print a variety of elegant font sample sheets and catalogs
and install/uninstall fonts. Printer's Apprentice really shines when used
with uninstalled fonts located on CD-ROMs or disks. You can preview
uninstalled fonts with a few mouse clicks. Printer's Apprentice can also
print ultra-sharp catalog listings from CDs without installing a single
font. If you have been looking for advanced font printing and management,
Printer's Apprentice is for you!
Please take the time to look at the software. If you do any work
with desktop publishing or use many fonts with your PC, we think you
will find Printer's Apprentice to be an invaluable utility.
REMEMBER - This software is shareware!! If you like it, please see the
order information in this file or in the help system.
A MESSAGE FOR USERS OF PRINTER'S APPRENTICE 6.1a AND EARLIER VERSIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Two issues have come up that have convinced us it is time to change
our upgrade policies.
First, the Internet is both good and bad. On more than one occasion our
technical support people have spoken with individuals who mentioned that
codes for commercial and shareware packages are available on hacker Web
sites. Both large and small software companies cannot afford to be
ripped off by these people.
Second, for many years Lose Your Mind Development had a policy of
unlimited upgrades. As long as you had the registration code, you could
continue to download upgrades and disable the nag screens. Ordering new
diskettes and manuals was optional. The Windows 95 version took over a
year to develop and test. It was close to a 100% rewrite of old code.
Without upgrade revenue, we will not be able to support this product or
continue future development.
What does this mean to you?
1) Is this the first time you have used Printer's Apprentice? Then we
hope you enjoy the software and do consider registering this
program.
2) If you purchased 6.5 or upgraded to 6.5 via one of our mailings, then
you are entitled to a free upgrade to 6.52. You should have received
an email with a new registration code.
3) If you are a registered user of 6.1a or previous versions, then you
will notice that the registration code does not work. We hope that
you will help support this product. The Upgrade Package includes
the software on two disks, your registration code, installation
instructions and the new 50+ page manual. The Upgrade Package
costs $12.00 plus shipping ($3.00 USA, $5.00 outside of USA). You
can order by sending a check payable to
Lose Your Mind Development
P.O. Box 302
Haverford, PA 19041-0302.
Your name will be checked against a database of registered users!
So please don't order at this price unless you purchased a
previous version.
So, if you are a registered user of previous versions, and you want to
use the 6.52 version, you need to upgrade. We want to be able to provide
you with more high quality software in the future.
We are sure many of you are now wondering what the future upgrade policy
will be. Simply, minor upgrades will always be free. We owe it to the
users to fix bugs, etc. Major upgrades of the software will most likely
have a fee. If you have any questions about this change in our upgrade
policy, please don't hesitate to email us at btkinkel@igi.net.
INSTALL/UNINSTALL AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-----------------------------------------
To install Printer's Apprentice, you need a computer running Windows 95.
We recommend at least a Pentium class machine with 16 megabytes
of memory.
This version of the software does not include the Visual Basic run time
(VB40032.DLL) in the distribution ZIP file. If this file is not present
on your computer, you need to download a copy from the Lose Your Mind
Development Web site (http://www.igi.net/~btkinkel). You can also download it
from the Compuserve WINUTIL forum.
** Information about OCX and DLL versions shipped with this software can
** be found at the end of this file.
To install Printer's Apprentice
-------------------------------
1. Create a temporary directory and unzip the distribution
.ZIP file to that directory.
2. Double click the SETUP.EXE icon found in that temporary
directory. This program will install Printer's Apprentice on
your computer.
3. After you have installed Printer's Apprentice, you can delete
the temporary directory and the SETUP.EXE file.
4. We recommend placing the distribution .ZIP file on a backup
floppy in case you need to reinstall Printer's Apprentice.
After Printers' Apprentice is installed, run the software by choosing the
Printer's Aprentice icon on the Start menu.
If you need to uninstall this software, use the Start Menu to select
the Uninstall item from the Printer's Apprentice group.
SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTION
----------------------
Because this is a shareware application, we encourage users and companies to
distribute this program. If you are a commercial shareware distributor or
online service (Web, FTP site, BBS, etc), please refer to the information
in the file VENDINFO.DIZ. This file explains the terms of distribution for
this software.
VENDINFO.DIZ also contains standard descriptions for the software. We ask
that you use this text for your online descriptions and catalog text in
reference to FontReview.

ActiveX OCX/DLL's Shipped with Printer's Apprentice
---------------------------------------------------
Printer's Apprentice, like many other Windows applications, uses ActiveX
controls and DLLs. Our setup program does not copy an OCX/DLL file to your
windows system directory if a newer version of the file exists.
Unfortunatly, not all application setup programs are as friendly. For example,
Printer's Apprentice was compiled with version 4.02 of tabctl32.ocx. If
another program installs version 1.02 of tabctl32.ocx without checking to make
sure it is not overwriting a newer version, Printer's Apprentice will not run.
If Printer's Apprentice does not load, check the version numbers of the following
files located in your windows system directory. To check a version number,
right click on the file, select "Properties" from the menu, and click the Version
tab. Common OCX/DLL version conflict error messages include "Error 429, you do not
have the proper license to use this functionality" and "Cannot load from file."
Listed below are the version numbers of the OCX/DLL files that are shipped
with PA inside the SETUP.EXE.
